NSTC’S EMDR Training Program

NSTC’s EMDRIA-APPROVED CANADIAN BASIC EMDR THERAPY TRAINING PROGRAM

(February 2024)

This EMDR training program has an excellent track record for producing confident EMDR clinicians, delivering over 100 complete programs since 2007. Our current completion rate is over 90%

Under the direction of Barbara Horne MASc, RP, RMFT & Philippe Gauvreau PsyD, EMDRIA-Approved Consultants & Trainers, the Niagara Stress & Trauma Clinic offers regularly-scheduled commercial and private on-site courses in Eastern and Central Canada, supported by a team of 9 local EMDRIA-Approved Consultants. NSTC offers the only French-language EMDR training program in North America.

These small-group trainings (maximum 36) are well recognized in the Canadian EMDR community for their effectiveness in enabling clinicians to immediately incorporate EMDR into their work with clients. In fact, enthusiastic previous course participants are our biggest source of referrals to the program.

NSTC offers Basic EMDR Therapy Training in two formats: in-person or virtual.

NSTC’s 63 Hour In-Person Basic EMDR Therapy Training

NSTC usually delivers the In-Person program in two parts, separated by a 2 to 3-month interval. The consultation hours follow each part, usually in 2-hour group Zoom meetings with the trainer/facilitator from your program. You will work with the same staff throughout your training and you will complete the training within the same program.

  • Part 1:
    3½ days (15 didactic hours & 3 Practicums (12 hours))
  • Part 2:
    3 days (15 didactic hours & 2 Practicums (8 hours))
  • Consultation:
10 hours Consultation (in five 2-hour group Zoom meetings)

NSTC’s 66 Hour Virtual Basic EMDR Therapy Training

The Virtual program in delivered over 8 days; four training ‘weekends’ of 2 days each (usually a Friday and Saturday). The final day includes the first consultation session.  The remaining consultation hours follow each part in 2-hour group Zoom meetings with the trainer/facilitator from your program.

  • Part 1:
    4 days in two Fri./Sat. sessions (18 didactic hours & 3 Practicums (12 hours))
  • Part 2:
    3.5 days in 2 Fri./Sat. sessions (18 didactic hours & 2 Practicums (8 hours))
  • Consultation:
10 hours Consultation (five 2-hour group Zoom meetings) scheduled sporadically after each Part.

We also offer privately-arranged on-site courses at your agency. The program is expanding into new centres – please contact us if you would like a course either at your site or in your city.

About the Course

This program is unusual for its comprehensive focus on developmental trauma, teaching a step-by-step attachment & trauma history-taking and trauma recovery planning process. It also incorporates the foundational theory of Structural Dissociation for work with Complex PTSD, with additional reference to Polyvagal Theory.

This experiential program is divided into three parts:

  • Part 1 equips you to work with simple PTSD cases.
  • Part 2 offers techniques and considerations for working with complex PTSD (C-PTSD) and special populations, and
  • Consultation hours (10 hours) give you the support you need to successfully integrate EMDR into your practice.

Practicums

During both Parts 1 & 2, you will do personal EMDR work in groups of 2 or 3, closely supervised by our team (on a 1:9 in-person or 1:6 virtual ratio). This is done in five 4-hour practicums during Parts 1 and 2. You work with the same trainer and facilitator throughout the program – this continuity helps us track your progress.

Following each part, you will have what you need to immediately begin using EMDR with your clients, with some restrictions in place before Part 2. Our training groups often go on to form peer-support networks or consultation groups for continued clinical support.

Consultations

In addition to Parts One & Two, there is a 10-hour consultation component to the EMDR training, for the purpose of helping you integrate EMDR into your current work with clients. This is done by means of five 2-hour group Zoom Consultations, spaced throughout the training (two of them between Part One and Part Two and three of them, after Part Two). During these consultations, you will get help with case-consultation and any outstanding issues that are getting in the way of putting EMDR to work, with your clients.

The Learning Management System (LMS) – “Thinkific”

2020’s COVID-19 pandemic required us to develop a fully-experiential online version of the training program.  Given how successful this has proven, we intend to continue offering virtual trainings for those who prefer them, as well as returning to the in-person format.  Furthermore, all course materials, for both in-person and virtual programs, are now located on our Thinkific Learning Management System (LMS).  When you register for a NSTC training, you will be registered for your particular course, onto this platform, and will access all course materials there.   When the training is finished, you will be de-registered from that course, and permanently registered onto the Resource Site, from which you will be able to access updated materials going forward, indefinitely.
